February Photo Collage - Day 26 - Brown Family, Ballarat, c1886

This post is for day 26 of the February Photo Collage Festival. The photograph above from my February Photo Collage shows three generations of the Brown family when they lived at Ballarat. Given the ages of the children in the photograph I would say it was taken about 1886.

Back Row L-R: George James Fullerton Brown (1878-1940), George Brown (husband of Jemima nee Crookston)(1817-1899), Mary Jemima Euphemia (Effie) Brown (1872-1942).
Middle Row L-R: Mary Brown (nee Fullerton) (1851-1935), George Brown (husband of Mary)(1849-1929), Jemima Brown (nee Crookston) (c1820-1891).
Front Row L-R (Children): Robert Melville Brown (1885-1913), Grace Marcella Brown (1883-1917) and William Peter Brown (1881-1953).

Photographer: Unknown.
Location of original: I scanned this from a copy in the possession of a cousin, Rosalie. Thanks Rosalie.
Date: c1886.

  1. What a magnificent photo! So much to look at. I like the formality of a studio photo. We try to take multi-generational photos today but I just don't think they compare to these ones of yesteryear. Or is it the fact that the old ones are in black and white/sepia? Does that allow us to focus on the character in the faces rather than be distracted by the colour (and I suspect less inspiring fashion of today)??

  2. This is a great multi-generational photo Aillin...you're so lucky to have it.
