I have no surnames or given names or locations relevant to my family history beginning with the letter X. I have decided instead to feature a surname which includes the letter X within it, Mannix.
X is for...X as in Mannix
Mannix is the maiden surname of my Great Great Grandmother, Catherine (Kate) McCarthy (1842-1917). Catherine Mannix was baptised 22 May 1842 in the Catholic Parish of Milltown, County Kerry, Ireland, the daughter of Michael Mannix and Mary Bowler of Clash. The baptism sponsors were Jeremiah Foly and Catherine Murphy. Other children of this couple baptised in Milltown parish were:
- Maurice Mannix, baptised 1836, sponsors Thomas Johnstone and Mary Mannix
- Edmund Mannix, baptised 1839, sponsors James Agan and Julia Bowler.
- and possibly also Michael Mannix, baptised 1845, parents Michael and Mary Mannix, sponsors Michael Tangney and Mary Tangney.
It is known that other Mannix's, cousins of Kate, also immigrated to Australia, including James Mannix who lived at Strathfieldsaye near Bendigo.
A family story, and similarities of appearance among my McCarthy relatives, suggest that Archbishop Daniel Mannix (1864-1963, Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne for 46 years) was also a 'cousin' of Kate. His family came from Charleville, County Cork, so if there is any family connection it is probably at least as far back as the eighteenth century.
Please also see my previous post M is for McCarthy for more information about Catherine's family.
