| SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. (1850, March 2). The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser(NSW : 1843-1893), p. 2. Retrieved February 4, 2011, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article696052 |
Among the many passengers listed there were quite a number (all named) leaving from Sydney on 27 February 1850 on the barque William and Mary for San Francisco, California - surely on their way to the California Gold Rush.
Since deciding to create this post I realised that the same passenger list is already available here at The Ships List. Therefore, I have not reproduced the whole list here.

This is another great example of the treasures you can find on the National Library of Australia's Trove!
The California Digital Newspaper Collection is another great online newspaper resource. A search for the terms 'Sydney', 'Australia' and related keywords brings up lots of interesting results.
For example, the Daily Alta California of 11 April 1850 gives one interesting Californian opinion about colonial immigrants!
